The carcass of a 25-year-old male wild elephant that had been killed and skinned a day earlier by poachers in Chaung Tha Forest Reserve. Inspection by a team of police, vets, MTE staff, and members of EERU revealed that the poachers first shot this elephant with an anesthetic dart, then cut his hind legs with a dagger to maim him and make him fall on his knees instead of onto one side. Had the elephant fallen onto his side, the poachers would have lost half of the skin. Poisoning darts with widely available herbicides is a common method used by poachers.
