Manuel (21) near one of the empty elevator shafts he fell down in February 2011. The empty shafts in the former Grand Hotel building became giant rubbish bins and also a serious danger for residents; in recent years, a handful of people, including several children, have fallen to their death down the shafts. Once a luxury destination for the wealthy and the continent's biggest hotel, the building is now a concrete shell and home to about 6,000 squatters. Those unable to occupy one of the rooms sleep in the corridors, basements and even on the roof of the building.
