Joao Goncalves, 45, a community chief in the former Grand Hotel, with his sons in a basement room with no electricity and windows. Once a luxury destination for the wealthy and the continent's biggest hotel, the building is now a concrete shell and home to about 6,000 squatters. Those unable to occupy one of the rooms sleep in the corridors, basements and even on the roof of the building.
