Families on Tarawa spend many hours building coral rock walls to either protect their homes or to reclaim land eroded away by a combination of storm surge and sea level rise. They build a walled enclosure filling and compacting it with organic and inorganic waste. The environmental and social issues concerned with damaging the coral reef seems to be a secondary concern to protection of the land and themselves in this process.
