Internally Displaced People (IDPs), victims of the mud flow, do their laundry using water trucked-in by a private company. The government used to provide this service for free but now wants the 600 IDP families living in the area to move out of their makeshift homes and to start paying for water, 2000 Rp (about 0.2 USD per family), per week. Since May 2006, more than 10,000 people in the Porong subdistrict of Sidoarjo have been displaced by hot mud flowing from a natural gas well that was being drilled by the oil company Lapindo Brantas. The torrent of mud - up to 125,000 cubic metres per day - continued to flow three years later.
