45 year old shrimp farmer Abdul Rahim says most of his shrimps died in 2006 following the mud flow, as mud from the disaster area was piped into the Porong River which indirectly supplies his ponds. Since then his yields have slowly been increasing but are still far lower than the pre-disaster levels. Since May 2006, more than 10,000 people in the Porong subdistrict of Sidoarjo have been displaced by hot mud flowing from a natural gas well that was being drilled by the oil company Lapindo Brantas. The torrent of mud - up to 125,000 cubic metres per day - continued to flow three years later.
