A Besuki villager, now living in a makeshift shack, holds onto a certificate of payment for land and house issued by the local Kepala Desa (Village Head) but which will probably not be legally sufficient to substantiate her claims for total compensation for loss of her home in the mud flow. Since May 2006, more than 10,000 people in the Porong subdistrict of Sidoarjo have been displaced by hot mud flowing from a natural gas well that was being drilled by the oil company Lapindo Brantas. The torrent of mud - up to 125,000 cubic metres per day - continued to flow three years later.
