Blue marker post marks part of the 2,000 hectare corridor it is rumoured will be created in order to forge a drainage canal from the mud flow area to the coast, 15km away, in order to finally drain out all the mud. Since May 2006, more than 10,000 people in the Porong subdistrict of Sidoarjo have been displaced by hot mud flowing from a natural gas well that was being drilled by the oil company Lapindo Brantas. The torrent of mud - up to 125,000 cubic metres per day - continued to flow three years later.
