Signboards put up by locals by the side of the dam, complaining about the drilling company that accidentally started the mud flow that destroyed their homes, and the fact that they are still owed 80 percent of the compensation money promised to them. Since May 2006, more than 10,000 people in the Porong subdistrict of Sidoarjo have been displaced by hot mud flowing from a natural gas well that was being drilled by the oil company Lapindo Brantas. The torrent of mud - up to 125,000 cubic metres per day - continued to flow three years later.
