Sculpture recreating the famous photograph of an East German border guard jumping to freedom over the Berlin Wall in its early days of construction when it was little more than a barbed wire fence. This is near the exact spot on Bernauer Strasse where the photo was taken and where many desperate scenes took place in 1961 as people jumped from the windows of their houses that stood on the edge of the Wall into West Germany. The green area is the former "death strip" that was created on the eastern side of the Wall once it was erected making it more difficult to escape to the West.
