The River Spree flows past the Nikolai quarter of former East Berlin - restored in the 1980s by the East German government for the city's 750th anniversary. Before the Wall came down it was the most sought after residential area in the East, inhabited by Stasi agents and others with good government connections. In the background is the dome of the Berlin Cathedral.
