The chief of a small village outside Lilongwe, Malawi walks among fresh graves on March 9, 2001. Many adults in his village have died of AIDS, orphaning their children. More than 13 million African children have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. Worldwide, more than 20 million people have died since 1981.
