This woman received a fistula operation in the University Hospital of Kamenge in Bujumbura. For years she smelled of leaking urine. Left untreated, fistula can lead to chronic medical problems, including ulcers and kidney disease. A simple surgical procedure can normally repair the injury, but the problem in Burundi is that there is no-one trained to perform the operation. This woman's operation was possible thanks to an initiative of Handicap International and Gynecologie Sans Frontieres.
