The apartment building where Ivan Safranov, a 51-year-old Russian journalist, plunged to his death. Safronov, a military affairs writer for the Kommersant daily newspaper, died after falling out of a stairwell window between the fourth and fifth floor of his apartment on 2 March 2007. He lived on the third floor. Safronov had faced threats while reporting on highly sensitive political issues and many believe his death to have been connected to his investigative work. The U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists said that 13 journalists have been killed in contract-style murders since Putin took office in 2000.
