Sfiso, a drug user, injects himself with a used syringe of 'nyaope' on a street in Hillbrow, an inner-city neighbourhood with a reputation as a centre for illicit drug use. 'Nyaope' is usually described as a crude form of heroin cut with anything from anti-retrovirals to rat poison to pool cleaner. It is cheap, at about 20 Rand or GBP 1.11, and addictive.
