32 year old Mekia Endris received money from a micro-credit scheme. "I became a member in 2003. I received a 500 birr loan and saved up 2500 birr by selling home made spices. I also worked as a cashier at a public Co-operative shower service for half the day and put myself through beauty school for the other half. After six months of training, I borrowed another 5000 birr and bought basic equipment for the beauty salon. Within a year I will pay back this loan and then will be able to borrow up to 10000 birr. I now have one hair-dryer and would like to get more, and I would like to sell cosmetics on the side. I have learned to style hair, and to give manicures and pedicures and facials. When I finished high school I became unemployed and got involved with a man. We had two children together but he left me when life became difficult, so I had to raise my children by myself. It was difficult but now I can send them to a good school. The Co-operative has made a huge difference in my life. I used to live a secluded life but now I have the confidence to go out more and interact with the community that I used to be ashamed to face. I have bought a mattress and new clothes for my children".
