A young girl waits to collect water from a pump in Kroo Bay. Kroo Bay, a slum built on a rubbish dump on the eastern outskirts of the capital Freetown, houses around 6,500 people. The rubbish that is washed down the hill from the city toward Kroo Bay is compacted in the bay to the extent that houses can be built on the surface, thus reclaiming land from the sea.
