School children ride their donkeys home from school, bringing with them water from a stand pipe near their school. Mackenley, 4, and his sister Lovenica, 7, are thus in charge of their familiy's water supply. In 2011, according to WHO and UNICEF, only 48 percent of the rural population had access to drinking water and only 29 percent had sanitation facilities. They live in the area Les Salines where there is not a single water source and say thay are happy to own a donkey because with the animal the journey is quicker and easier than walking.
