Jacqueline Nyiramayonde outside her shop in Nyamata. Nyamata was singled out to be part of The Earth Institute's Millennium Villages Project, a project that aims to use a 'grass roots' approach to lifting developing country villages out of poverty. On her return to her ancestral village of Nyamata in 1998, Jacqueline adopted five members of her extended family who had been orphaned by the 1994 genocide.
