The Kosovo B (left) and the Kosovo A power plants. Kosovo A is a lignite power station, the oldest in the country, opened in 1962. The European Union has demanded that the plant must close by 2017. It has no filtration system and is estimated to pump 2.5 tons of lignite dust into the atmosphere every hour, this exceeds the EU limit by 74 times and is said by the Kosovo Ministry of Environment to be responsible for 63 percent of baby fatalities and 48 percent of stillborn babies in Obiliq/Kastriot (Serbian/Albanian) the town nearest to the plant.
