An elderly blind woman looking after her grandchildren; their parents have died from AIDS. Like the rest of Africa, Uganda has been severely hit by the AIDS epidemic, with over 1.5 million children losing one or both parents to the disease. However, with extensive education programmes, strongly supported by the government, Uganda provides a rare example of hopeful statistics, with numbers of new cases of HIV and AIDS steadily falling.
