The Beltane Festival is an annual event when winter is purged by fire. From sunset on 30 April until early morning, over 300 volunteers create a dramatic reimagining of pagan gaelic folklore surrounded by a crowd of 6000 people. The May Queen arises to herald summer through a battle between elemental forces of order and chaos reaching a climax in the death of the green man in his winter form before bringing him back to life.
