A statue of a cardinal lies between bodies of men in the underground corridors in the Catacombs in Palermo. In 1599, Capuchin monks discovered that these catacombs contained a preservative that helped mummify dead bodies. As a result, between 1500 and 1920 more than 8,000 Sicilians chose to be buried here.
