Appenzeller men, some in traditional costume, in discussion prior to going to vote in the annual Landsgemeinde (Cantonal Assembly), where regional issues are voted on in the main square by a show of hands. Appenzell is a distinctly traditional canton, one of the last remaining places where this direct form of democracy - in which there is no anonymity - is still used, and where women only received the right to vote in 1990. Men carry swords as symbols of their right to vote.
