Revellers wearing colourful costumes, including bird masks and 'wings' gather on Cartlton Hill in Edinburgh for the annaul Beltane Fire Festival. The Beltane Festival is an annual event when winter is purged by fire. From sunset on 30 April until early morning, over 300 volunteers create a dramatic reimagining of pagan gaelic folklore surrounded by a crowd of 6000 people. The May Queen arises to herald summer through a battle between elemental forces of order and chaos reaching a climax in the death of the green man in his winter form before bringing him back to life.
