Women waiting to receive a fistula operation in the University Hospital of Kamenge in Bujumbura. Women with fistula, a hole in the birth canal, smell of leaking urine and are often socially excluded from their community. Left untreated, fistula can lead to chronic medical problems, including ulcers and kidney disease. A simple surgical procedure can normally repair the injury, but the problem in Burundi is that there is no-one trained to perform the operation. These women's operation was possible thanks to an initiative of Handicap International and Gynecologie Sans Frontieres.
