Koike 1 camp on the outskirts of the city of Minamisoma, 30 kilometres from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Some two hundred people live here in small prefabricated houses, each no more than 15 square metres big. Most have been living here since 2011 when an earthquake triggered a tsunami which swept across the coast of Northern Honshu killing over 15,000 people and destroying about 300,000 homes. Seawater breached the defences at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant triggering the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. The plant was shut down and a 20 km evacuation zone around the plant was declared by the government. Levels of radiation in the evacuation zone remain high and in 2015 about 230,000 people still remained in temporary housing.
