The Vele di Scampia (Sails of Scampia), a housing complex (by architect Franz di Salvo) built during the 1960s and early 1970s. Seven separate Ziggurat -like blocks, were put up forming part of a regeneration project that sought to create a new community in Naples' northern suburbs. However, the planners failed to provide jobs, services and infrastructure. The buildings fell into disrepair and the Scampia became infamous for its drug and crime problems all controlled by the Mafia (Camorra). Three of the blocks were demolished between 1997 and 2003 while the rest remain derelict and occupied only by squatters and drug dealers.
