Thalita Booi (30) uses a toilet known as a Mshengu (chemical toilet). Before the Mshengus were installed in 2010, there were no toilets so she had to cross a main road and use a bush. She says: 'Crossing the road was a problem. There were tsotsis (criminals) who would grab you. At first I was excited. It was the first time I'd had a toilet in my life. But the Mshengus are bad. They are cleaned with very strong chemicals and if you sit on the toilet after they have been cleaned, you get a rash...We can't go at night, it is not safe. Sometimes the tsotsis lock you inside the toilet. Also, the Mshengus are not secured to the ground and sometimes children push them over.'
