Kabisuba Bubele with her two malnourished daughters. When a militia attacked their village, the family fled to the forest, and without much food, water or shelter they stayed in the woods for about a month. Vimilia Bubele, 8 months old, is still breastfeeding, but for her older sister the starvation has been more severe. Loti Bubele is three years old but she weighs less than 10kg. The Panzi hospital in Bukavu currently has about 40 children hospitalized who all suffer from starvation and malnutrition. Severe starvation and malnutrition can cause long-term damage to vital organs and the brain function of children.
