A farmer squats on a small check dam, one of many built on the Wakal River. The downward rush of water has tremendous erosive force and removes fertile soil during the rainy season. These dams not only reduce the soil erosion but also help to raise the groundwater table. On one side of the dam an opening feeds a small canal with irrigation water.
