Security is tight during the transportation of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty to an armoured train, where the radioactive material will be brought to Russia for downgrading. The removal of Kazakhstan's HEU is part of the U.S. Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) which tries to secure nuclear material around the world to prevent their misuse.
