The Marange diamond fields in the east of Zimbabwe are under the direct control of the police and army, who use violence and intimidation to force local people to dig for diamonds on their behalf. The horrific conditions endured by the diggers appear to undermine the Kimberley Process, the international system meant to put a stop to the global trade in 'blood diamonds'.
