On May 4th, 2007, the town of Greensburg was leveled by an E5 tornado. Over 95% of the city was destroyed by 200 mph winds, and the entire county was designated as a disaster area by the federal and state governments. After the tornado, the city council passed a resolution stating that all city building would be built to LEED - platinum standards, making it the first city in the nation to do so.
