Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Comrade Duch, is the first Khmer Rouge leader to be tried by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia for the crimes of the regime between 1975 and 1979.

Duch, who was in charge of the infamous Tuol Sleng prison, was arrested in 1999 after being tracked down by Panos photographer Nic Dunlop. His trial on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity began in 2009. A year earlier, as part of the judicial process, Duch was taken to the scene of his crimes. Those present said that he collapsed in tears after stating, "I ask for your forgiveness - I know that you cannot forgive me, but I ask you to leave me the hope that you might."
