Senior John Iakopo stands in front of one of the colonial buildings (built in 1905) that make up the Maritime Institute of Tuvalu on the island of Amakuku, which is regularly flooded during high tide. The tiny Pacific Island nation of Tuvalu is one of the few places in the world already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change and global warming. Due to the rising sea level, erosion, and extreme weather events, the island nation is shrinking and may eventually disappear.
