A mobile education unit stands nearby the Greensburg "Green Town" offices. After the community decided to rebuild their town sustainably, the "Green Town" non-profit was established to provide residents and rebuilders in Kiowa County, Kansas with resources. "Green Town" has created several eco-conscious educational units to help promote environmental consciousness in its community...On May 4th, 2007, the town of Greensburg was leveled by an E5 tornado. Over 95% of the city was destroyed by 200 mph winds, and the entire county was designated as a disaster area by the federal and state governments. After the tornado, the city council passed a resolution stating that all city building would be built to LEED - platinum standards, making it the first city in the nation to do so. Greensburg is rebuilding as a "green" town, and as the community approaches the two-year anniversary of the devastating storm, signs of progress are emerging amidst the wreckage still marring much of this farming community.
