Greece: Patra Palace by Alfredo D'Amato

Young Afghan refugees play cards in an abandoned building where they squat. Patras is home to about 3,000 illegal immigrants. Most of them are Afghans, although there are also some Iranians and Uzbeks. They stop in Patras to try and find passage to various European destinations by hiding in ships, containers and trucks parked in the port. If they are lucky they will make it to their destination. Many of them live in shacks made from cartons, plastic and wood they found on the beach. To shelter from the cold they also squat in abandoned buildings, living without water and electricity. The living conditions are inhumane and unhygienic.
